Zippity Doo Dah Jelly Roll Happiness

Once upon a time.... I won this jelly roll. Zippity Doo Dah designed by Sandy Gervais.  It was the very First Jelly roll to inhabit my stash.   It was a treasure and so cute all rolled up. I marveled at it for a long time, then one day knowing that there was no going back once it did this ..... I opened it up!

Have I told you before that I love red, white and blue ??
YES I do!

Early in the spring....
I came across this site www.jellyrollquilters.com and guess what they were doing, a Jelly Roll mystery quilt.  It was sure to be beautiful they promised so I jumped on the bandwagon.  Soon I had 2 friends who are experienced quilters on the band wagon too.

I know some of you quilters are probably jelly roll pros and use a lot of jelly rolls, but for me when I buy fabric I always buy a little extra.... just in case. With a jelly roll.... there is no extra. I love all the different strips of fabric but you get 40 strips of 2 1/2" wide fabric,  that's it.  I was a little hesitant making the first cut,  but this project was a great confidence booster.

( This translates into MORE reasons to buy Jelly rolls !)

 HORRAY for  Me!

In the process of the mystery I discovered.... I am not a mystery girl.   I like to know how it is all going to look in the end. I am definitely a visual person... See it then do it.  I had a hard time deciding what to use for the background fabric. I wondered if I had sorted my strips "correctly".  So long after the mystery was revealed and  my two other quilting friends had their mystery all pieced together and were Glowing that they had accomplished the task at hand..... I started because they kept asking me.... "Have you started yet???"  Now mine is finished sans the borders.  Hopefully that will be added in the next few days .

The strips were separated  into 3 bags for months.

Finally after some serious goal setting and a few deep breaths,  months 2 and 3 of the mystery became touchable blocks.....

Once I had these done I was thrilled.
Pretty easy blocks but still thrilled!

Month 4 created more hesitance and a few more deep breaths were needed because I had to cut the strips for this month IN HALF  to  1 1/4 inches .  After I had accomplished those Sweet little 6" Log Cabin blocks.... I was in Love!  This is the first time I have ever done a Log Cabin block.   I was so proud of myself... They turned out perfect and so like a proud momma with a camera I thought they needed their own little .......

        FALL photo shoot.

ALL FINISHED!
Red White And Blue Denim Debut

"Sleeping Under The Stars"
 Denim Charity Quilt

The top was finished in 2010

Then life took a stroll through many various trails
 of living with a family,
This treasure got folded up
and laid in a pile somewhere in my sewing room.
It was enough that the top was complete.
My attention deficit kicked in
and other FUN projects were started,
and in the very back of my mind I knew
I wanted to tackle quilting this myself .
That took more than an ounce of motivation
to push the start button and get started.

This is the second quilt that I have quilted
on my little sewing machine.
I am gaining in knowledge ....
It is not perfection by any means
but perfection is far down the list of what makes a quilt loveable.

Now THE WHOLE QUILT
 is FINISHED!

And now I am going to overload you with pictures
of all of the
denim glory of this finished quilt.

It is a mixture of Denim, cotton, and flannel.
The back is flannel
It does have batting inside.

This quilt started with
The four corner blocks which were orphan blocks
that  needed a home where they could be loved.
My quilt guild sent them home with me and I was told to
"do something with them"
It was a challenge to make myself work with fabric
that I thought was a bit on the "ugly" side.
BUT now
When I look at the whole thing
I LOVE IT!

so here is my baby creation.......

perle cotton stars

blanket stitching around this appliqued square

appliqued stars and a true blue pocket

  anyone remember "MUDD" jeans?

Tied with perle cotton  for a touch of country charm
and a BOO BOO.
I marked the cotton blocks with a lead pencil
and then decided I did not want to quilt circles
 in those corner blocks.
The lead pencil  did not wash out  the best.

The fabric color is now faded  in those squares
from scrubbing ....

oopsie.

Cross hatching here
just because one or two blocks might be a nice touch
and not make me crazy.

Here is one of the "ugly" corner blocks
now beautified with the added stars.
(I love the skinny bars quilting in the border.)

Quilted stars matches the star blocks on the back.

Back of the quilt

Does anyone in america not love stars and stripes together?

loving .....loving......loving.....
wondering how am i going to give this away????

stars and stripes
swoon.

pretending it can stay here....

I hope it is loved where ever it finds a home.

I think any child would love it.

I love it.....
and i am making another one for me
(and my grandchildren).
  YIPPEE!

This quilt does not have a pattern  it was designed by me.
Quilting was done with my walking foot
because that is all I know how to do. ; )

If you stopped by
I'd love it if you would
say hello down below : )

Hope you are staying cool on this summer day!

happy sewing trails to you!
